I lived in Siem Reap for nine months and still never got to see everything that Cambodia offers. They will take you places off of the tourist circuit and it could change your life. Especially about hiring a driver and a guide.
I have a lot more to say about my remarkable experiences in Cambodia, but I wanted to start with this more practical post. Tidbits of information that could have helped me during my own stay in Siem Reap and tips that I hope will help you as you plan your own trip to this beautiful country. Before even leaving Cambodia though, I knew that there were several details I wanted to share.
I recently had the opportunity to visit Cambodia, an easy flight on Dragonair from Hong Kong. English is the second language, followed by French, even though they are not widely spoken except in the capital. There are various dialects spoken in areas outside Phnom Penh.
It is inherited from the Mon-Khmer family and enriched by the Indian Pali and the Sanskrit languages. Gentlemen are required to wear long trousers and ladies should wear long trousers or long skirts. For tourists who would like to try the public local transport – which is an opportunity to get to know the country from a different perspective – it is always being advised to book two seats in a bus or even a taxi in order to get the least bit of comfort as the front seat in a taxi for example would have to be shared if not booked exclusively. Coaches from Vietnam can easily be booked and in most cases the same bus will take you all the way through. There are land borders from Thailand , Laos and Vietnam although the easiest are those between Bangkok and Siem Reap, and between Ho Chi Minh City and Phnom Penh.
Although the main reason to visit is easy access to the Angkor Wat historical park, the town has a good market and excellent night market with varied goods, some of surprisingly good quality. Siem Reap is a small town filled with tourists and a large Cambodian population who have moved from the surrounding countryside to get their share of the tourist dollar.
